These meristems are called apical meristems. Roots also expand through the soil by growing at their tips as a result of apical meristems. All buds that you see on a tree contain apical meristems. Trunk diameter growth occurs as a result of another meristem already mentioned called the vascular cambium.
When a tree ages: 1 Growth slows down; 2 Trees are more susceptible to diseases and insects; 3 The tops of the trees are more likely to die back; 4 Wounds compartmentalize more slowly; 5 There are fewer numbers of leaves relative to the size of the tree; and 6 There is an increased number of dead branches. Lecture Notes in Earth Sciences , Vol. Plants use the energy in some of the carbon molecules they make for the activities to keep themselves alive and to reproduce.
This process is called cellular respiration, which all living things do. But there are still carbon molecules glucose left over. These left-over glucose molecules are used to form the complex structures of plants, such as leaves, stems, branches and roots as well as fruits, seeds, nuts or vegetables. Each year trees use the left-over carbon molecules to add to themselves, making themselves bigger in mass size.
