Right now I'm thinking about a 6mm AI rimmed made out of marlin the the marlin is perfect for making 7x57 family of cartridges and is almost right for making family cartridges and if you wanted to get really western I think you might even be able to make win family cartridges work. Can you imagine a 50 Alaskan 3 shot bolt gun insert Tim the toolman Taylor grunt hear. Like I said I don't have one yet so these are just ideas from the mind of a deranged engineering student.
Now I want these suggestions about wild catting the MN to stop right now! You guys are getting me thinking, a dangerous thing, about a. Getting over these thoughts is going to be alot like when I quit my 3 packs of cigs a day habit!
Get a couple of fired brass poison-maggot cases and your 35 long M die or kluge and open them up. Sure it won't work the whole way but you will have the first serious step and a good idea of the mag alterations needed.
It can be rebored out to 35 with a. It would be a great rifle even if you have to rework the FS and bob the barrel and stock a little. I wish I had kept my Tula just for this kind of project. I've entertained the idea a few times of reboring to 35 and building a Mannlicher stock for mine. Never have seen one offered for sale anywhere and don't really want to build one from scratch but oh well that would keep me out of trouble for a while.
Hi, Everyone is throwing around a bunch of different calibers here but for a hard hitting, accurate,do anything cartridge it would be hard to beat the 7. The Russian and Finns have done incredable work with these! Last edited by seagiant; at PM. To thow out a few more ideas Get a copy of the Gun Digest. He lists a 5. Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects. Captain Woodrow F. Now if someone has an intrest in all this, I can help. Back in the late 90's I bought a new Remington classic that would only shoot one bullet.
During the 80's I had chased Mannlicher-Schoenauers and had several of those fantastic carbines, including a , 8 X This 9. It is very close to the 8mm Mauser necked up to , not 9.
I got Clymer Reamers to spec out a finish reamer and go gauge compatible with the Redding custom 9. Pat Ryan at Redding to get it all correct. My machinist buddy did all the work on rebarreling the Classic. I got a deer with it later and still take the rifle out occasionally.
Then a couple of years later I fell into the idea of reworking a Mosin carbine. Turns out that the 9. That's when my machinist friend went throught mid-life crisis, took up IRONMAN tricathalons, met a tough as nails honey, gave his wife the boot, and left the scene. I still have the complete Mosin including carbine stock, less barrel, the new barrel, and the chambering reamer and go gauge.
If anyone is intrested in these things as a unit, seng a PM and I'll give you a price. FFL needed of course. Thanks for listening. The Mosin can be rebarreled to Marlin easily from what I have gathered. I've actually looked into doing just that with mine sometime after the two other projects on the burner are finished started?
Page 1 of 2 1 2 Last Jump to page:. All times are GMT Does this sound nuts? Re: Converting mosin nagant from 7. The list you have is doable, but will never get past the problem of a long smooth bore throat getting from the 7. Also the 7. If I were doing this, I'd see about pulling back the barrel to get the chamfer in the right place for the 7. In any case you need to measure the ammo and slug the barrel to check size.
You may need to lap out the barrel to keep it safe. Ammo is also cheap for both also. If you still continue good luck and show a picture or two. Answering your last question first, yes. I would stay away from silver soldering anything as it is a high temperature process that will affect any heat treating present and could well amount to uncontrolled heat treating or annealing itself. Both cartridges use a nominal. In fact, much of the 7. The standard 7. I am not familiar with the details of a M-N but normally for a project of this nature, I would set the barrel back enough to get virgin material to chamber the new cartridge.
In this case, that would amount to at least 1. I cannot say whether there is enough material in the barrel to allow this. After taking care of correctly chambering, you would have to address magazine function and proper feeding. The 7. You would probably have to shim the magazine narrower to maintain a reasonable relationship between consecutive cartridges; if you didn't, they could be almost side by side in the magazine.
This would require narrowing the follower and spring also. Without a sample rifle at hand, I won't even guess about making it feed successfully. Overall, I would say it is a challenging project for a gunsmithing student but not something to pay someone else to do. You could probably find a 7. Re: Answering your last question first, yes. I'd forgotten to consider the freebore issue, which would certainly affect things and make such a project impractical for my uses.
Thanks again for the help! The bolt face can have a bushing soldered in using plumbers solder without getting to hot, have done this a few times. The extractor can be welded with a torch and heat treated with the same, use spring steel for welding rod and don't over heat use nutral flame. Al, it looks like you can get a nice rifle Post by GeorgeGaskill » Mon Sep 06, pm in 7.
Interarms appears to be defunct but Charles Daly is importing the Mini-Mauser actions and rifles. Here is a reference on the Gun Parts Corp website. They are a lot more expensive than the one I bought and it makes the CZ look like more sense than building one from a mini action.
The only advantage I can see with building one yourself is you could chamber it with an accuracy reamer instead of the "shoot any size ammo" chamber that is standard. Here is an article about the CZ by a happy owner. Re: Al, it looks like you can get a nice rifle I appreciate the links. I have thought about putting an adjustable restrictor in the gas port to get away from the SKS throwing brass all over in a 50 yard circle.
For the shear joy, pain, suffering, elation, and hands on creating, I'd say the conversion of a 7.
