I would buy a fluval 2 plus or 3 plus and put it in the tank with the 1 plus she has personally I love the fluval plus filters, they are working really well for me in my tanks She knows that!

I have a chance at getting a smoking deal for a fluval I have a 45 gallon tall tank. Will this be enough filtration for it? In the place of that mechanical media is usually a good substitute. Fluval makes good canisters IME. I have a and thoroughly enjoy it. Good score on the 65g. Some patience, vinegar, and some Mr. Clean Magic Erasers or generic versions should make the glass look new again. I would suggest to check out the Ken's Fish website and look for a Fluval tune-up kit for your canister filter.
Ken's has a very good selection of replacement parts for all filter brands and at reasonable prices. That way, you will know it will be working in a like new condition free of potential leaks. I like to use a food grade silicone lube on my orings and gaskets.
For a couple of dollars, I use Danco Weatherproof Grease found at Home Depot, or any other home improvement store in the plumbing section. There are a lot of different brands you can use.
